The St. Mary's Family Birth Center provides comprehensive, family-centered services including labor, delivery, postpartum and newborn care. Services are provided for both high-risk and low-risk pregnancies and newborns.
Over 3,000 babies are delivered at St. Mary's each year. The competent and caring nursing staff of the Family Birth Center strives to honor every family's individual birth plan within a private, home-like environment.
The Birth Suites provide private rooms for the labor, delivery and recovery period, and two cesarean section operating rooms. The unit was designed to enhance privacy and family involvement at all stages of the birthing process.
Care after birth is provided in private rooms in the Family Care Suites where we encourage family participation in the care of the newborn. Though most babies room with their mothers, St. Mary's nursery staff offer skilled care and a tender touch if needed. Certified lactation specialists provide support, education and follow-up consultation to breastfeeding mothers.
The Family Care Suites also provide care to women who are hospitalized before delivery due to complications of pregnancy. Members of the nursing staff provide one-on-one teaching and antepartum support is available.
The St. Mary's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) was the first facility in the state of Wisconsin to care for critically ill newborns. The NICU, which is a Level III unit, is staffed by neonatologists and nurses who specialize in care of critically ill newborns. Some are transported to St. Mary's via helicopter or specially equipped ambulance. A team of neonatologists, RNs, LPNs, unit assistants, unit clerks, social workers, and physical therapists provide care for over 400 fragile newborns each year.
In conjunction with Dean Health System, St. Mary's Perinatology Clinc offers a wide variety of perinatal consulting and referral services. Services include high-risk pregnancy management and a range of prenatal diagnostic services. The clinic is staffed by a perinatologist, ultrasonographer and genetic counselors. The Perinatology Clinic is located on the second floor of St. Mary's Hospital.
St. Mary's offers a wide range of classes for expectant families. Hospital tours are available weekly.
