Through our exceptional health
care services, we reveal
the healing presence of God.

For quality cancer care that’s highly personalized, no hospital does it better than St. Mary’s.
That’s because, even as we treat the cancer, we never lose sight of the patient. Our professional care for adults – from cancer surgery and reconstruction to cancer pain management – is the product of evidence-based medicine as well as the important relationships we develop with patients throughout the entire cancer journey.

Partnership with Dean Clinic: After a primary-care physician refers patients to a Dean Clinic cancer specialist, the patients will have a medical home for this critical phase of their lives. The oncologists and their staff members will coordinate care every step of the way. Thanks to a regional system of clinics that are staffed by Madison-based oncologists, a great deal of cancer treatment occurs right in the local clinics.

St. Mary’s Oncology Unit is staffed by skilled nurses who specialize in cancer care, working as part of an extended team of experts: Dean Clinic oncologists, specialty surgeons, hospital-based physicians, a clinical nurse specialist for oncology, social workers, pastoral care professionals, psychologists and clinical dietitians. Additional medical specialists work with patients whose cancer requires expertise in the neurosciences, cardiothoracic care and digestive health.

In-Hospital Physician Care: St. Mary’s oncology program has only board-certified, experienced oncologists making oncology decisions. They are the same doctors who know the patient from care in the clinic, and they oversee patient progress in the hospital. In addition, St. Mary’s own hospital-based physicians provide care 24/7 to address medical issues as they arise in collaboration with oncologists or other specialists.

Hospital Discharge Planning: When a patient is ready to leave the hospital, a clear plan will address ongoing treatment and care needs. A nurse care manager and/or social worker dedicated to cancer care will coordinate the care plan for home or a skilled-care nursing facility, for example.

Partnership with Radiation Centers: For patients whose treatment includes radiation, St. Mary’s and Dean Clinic partner with regional providers to give patients the opportunity to remain close to home. The partnerships include Turville Bay MRI & Oncology Radiation Center in Madison and the Radiation Oncology Center at St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo.

Research Consortium: Dean Clinic’s oncology group participates in national cooperative research protocol studies that yield cutting-edge therapies.  These results not only expand physician knowledge but also may broaden a patient’s therapy options for health and healing.
