Neonatal Intensive Care

Every family looks forward to the birth of a healthy newborn. It is an exciting time with so much to look forward to. In some cases though, unexpected difficulties and challenges occur along the way. Some newborns have greater chances of complications because of conditions that occur during fetal development, pregnancy conditions of the mother or problems that may occur during labor and birth. Some complications are unexpected and may occur without warning. Other times, there are risk factors that make problems more likely.

Fortunately, advances in technology have helped improve the care of sick newborns. Under the care of specialized physicians and other health care providers, babies have a much greater chances for survival today than ever before.

Hundreds of little miracles begin their little lives in the St. Mary's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit each year – approximately 450 in fact. Prematurity is a factor in 85% of these admissions.

The St. Mary's Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is a Level III facility staffed by physicians and nurses with specific training in high risk neonatal care. Our NICU has 31 Level II and III beds and offers a full range of services including varying levels of care from intermediate to critical and unstable infants.

Poem
A new little life, so precious, so sweet
From the top of their head to their tiny, tiny feet
You are filled with emotions of both joy and fear
We send you our prayers for your child so dear.

We know this is not the event you planned for
We know because we too once walked through that door.
So, do we have any advice or wisdom from above?
Be patient and let your heart fill with new love!

Congratulations from the St Mary's NICU Family Involvement Council
