Health Databases

National Library of Medicine’s MedlinePlus offers up-to-date, quality health information.  This website provides information about diseases and general health, as well as information on medications and alternative and complementary therapies.  Also available in Spanish and over 40 other languages (limited content).  medlineplus.gov

Consumer Health Complete (EBSCO) via BadgerLink
Consumer Health Complete is a comprehensive resource for consumer-oriented health content. Consumer Health Complete provides health content from mainstream medicine to the many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated medicine. In addition, Consumer Health Complete includes the Clinical Reference System and the Lexi-PAL Drug Guide, which provides access to up-to-date, concise and clinically relevant drug monographs. The database is updated on a weekly basis, but is only available to Wisconsin residents.  www.badgerlink.net

CDC: Center for Disease Control and Prevention offers traveler’s health publications, immunization fact sheets, environmental health, information on diseases and conditions, as well as scientific data, surveillance and health statistics.  Also available in Spanish.  Other languages are also available, but with limited content.   www.cdc.gov

FamilyDoctor.org offers health information for men, women, seniors, parents & kids, well as health tools and ideas for healthy living. The site offers information in Spanish as well and English. The website is maintained by the American Academy of Family Physicians.  www.familydoctor.org

Mayo Clinic offers information and education from Mayo Clinic doctors on a wide variety of health conditions.  www.mayoclinic.com


The National Cancer Institute provides a drug dictionary, cancer-terms dictionary, and free pamphlets/booklets on over 100 cancer topics that you can download.  NCI also provides information on clinical trials, cancer statistics and more.   www.cancer.gov

The American Cancer Society provides information on cancer, treatment decision tools, local events/programs, the latest cancer news, and much more.   www.cancer.org

Children and Teen Health

KidsHealth provides doctor-approved health information about children, featuring separate areas for kids, teens and parents each with its own design and age-appropriate content.   www.kidshealth.org


American Diabetes Association offers information on nutrition, recipes, exercise, research and events relating to diabetes.   www.diabetes.org

Heart Health

American Heart Association’s website provides a good introduction about many heart disease topics and how to live a heart healthy lifestyle.

Kidney Disease

The National Kidney Foundation has patient information on diet and nutrition, chronic kidney disease, dialysis and more.  www.kidney.org

Mental Health

National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) is a national grassroots, self-help support and advocacy organization for individuals with mental illness. State and local resources available.  www.nami.org

National Institute of Mental Health has information on different mental health conditions.  Resources for finding help for a specific condition and on clinical trials are also available.


The American Stroke Association’s website provides a heart and stroke encyclopedia, information on warning signs, tips on how to cope with life after a stroke and much more.  www.strokeassociation.org

National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke provides fact sheets of specific neurological diseases provided by the NIH.  Use the A-Z list to browse for your topic.  Also available in Spanish.  www.ninds.nih.gov


Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics offers a wide variety of food and nutrition tips and fact sheets.  www.eatright.org

U.S. Department of Agriculture offers a gateway to reliable information on nutrition, healthy eating, physical activity and food safety.     www.nutrition.gov

Women’s Health

The Office on Women’s Health (part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services) has a great website with current health information and news for women.  You can read about health topics, recent publications, and government action that affect women’s health.  http://womenshealth.gov/
